I've made a link in the sidebar of [info]yuletide to the Dear Writer: I'll Be AFK for Yuletide post.

This is where you can post to let your Yuletide Author(s) that you may not be able to comment on your story immediately! It can be an anxious time, waiting to see if your recipient liked their story, and this can ease that for some, if they know you're not going to be around right away.

Early Note: On the new AO3 interface, comments on stories work differently than they did on the old website! You will no longer have to remember to hang on to emailed comments of your stories, so that you can respond, but you must not reply to comments left on your stories until after the author reveal, no matter how tempting that "reply" link is! Replying will not only reveal your identity to your recipient, but to everyone else who comes along and sees your comment. *g*

Updated Prompts Listing!

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 1:51 PM
The list of prompts is now updated to include all people who are still out for pinch hit, and should include everyone who does not yet have a full-length story, and should not include those who do.

The list is not dynamically updated, so uploading a story will not take that person off the list.

If you see your recipient on there and you have definitely uploaded a story of 1000+, you may have mistyped your recipient name, and you should go in and fix

More FAQs

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 1:04 PM
  • I don't show as having a gift in the archive, no matter how I search.

Even if you aren't displaying a gift count on your Dashboard, you either have a gift in the archive, you have a pinch hitter working feverishly to put your gift in the archive -- or you are a defaulter whose author also defaulted. If you default early in the process, a pinch hitter is not assigned if your author also defaults.

Also, because many people changed/altered their pseuds in the move to AO3, an exact search on your name may not retrieve your gift, even if it's there. As reported here, there is/was also a bug where things aren't being retrieved correctly if you're using a pseud in addition to your username. This will be fixed, and you don't need to do anything.

Again, we work very hard to make sure everyone who has not defaulted has a story by the time the archive opens! It's possible someone might slip through the cracks, particularly this year, with the changes and the move, but we're pretty sure we have everyone covered.

  • I don't show as having a gift in the archive, but my prompts aren't on the prompt list, either.

Again, it may be that there is a matching issue between your name listed as recipient, and your AO3 account. Additionally, the prompt list this year was put together with old-style bailing wire and gum, and we can't promise that everyone on it is as yet missing a full story, or that everyone that is missing a full story is on it.

  • I don't show as having a gift in the archive, but I didn't see my name go out for a pinch hit, and my prompts aren't on the prompt list.

See above answers for why your gift/prompts may not show. As for pinch hits, it's possible you simply missed seeing your name (particularly with the chaos of creating the backup list) or that your name was assigned to someone by means other than the mailing lists.

  • My recipient's prompts are on the prompt list, but I uploaded their story.

See the answer above, as to why we can't guarantee that everyone on the prompt list needs a story, or that there aren't those who do whose prompts aren't displaying.

  • I uploaded a story for my recipient, but now I can't find it.

It was suggested you bookmark your own work as a private bookmark in the instructions, particularly if you planned to upload a bunch of older works! If you search your own name in the main AO3 search box, you should be able to retrieve it, and bookmark it.

Ernest in Love

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Hi and Happy Yuletide to everyone!

I was just wondering, for those who have watched Ernest in Love, is there any deviation to the musical from the original play by Wilde?

Right now, I'm watching it, with the book in my hand, trying to grasp what was being said by the actresses :p

More HERE!
If your Dashboard doesn't display any gifts for you, and you know you didn't go out for pinch hit, never fear! Yet Another Wee Bug was reported that keeps gifts from displaying properly, when your Yuletide name is your pseud, not your username. You don't have to do anything, or change anything.

However, if you go to the Collection Works page and search: pseudname (username) in the gift box, it should retrieve a Mystery Work for you, even if it doesn't currently display on your Dashboard.

We're confident at this point that everyone either has a story, or has a pinch hitter feverishly working on one!

YULETIDE MADNESS BEGINS!

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 7:06 PM
I think I have everyone covered with a pinch hit, so we've open Yuletide Madness 2009! If you have a drabble or short for one of the prompts on the current list, this is the place to upload it!

And Yuletide 2009 itself is still open for uploading of full-length stories (those 1000 words or above, by AO3 measurements).

We ask that full-length stories still abide by the fandom and characters requested -- although everything is out for pinch hit, things can happen, so we want to make sure that everyone has a full-length story for one of their requests. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't write something for someone you know, in a Yuletide fandom you know they'd love, but this really is the challenge for the requests they made.

With Yuletide Madness, this was originally started to guarantee that even if they didn't have a full-length story, everyone had something, but it was still prompt-driven. We still assume that these will still be written to the list of prompts, at least matching on the fandom, if not any of the other specifics -- but if you know someone loves some other Yuletide fandom, then that can be cool, as well! Just keep in mind that we do still expect that they'll respect the recipient's tastes insofar as they've expressed them!

As mentioned before, posting is open to anyone with an AO3 account -- be sure and put the correct collections in the Collections/Challenges field!

  • lotesse: a note on the ongoing metafandom conversation - But I do think that - maybe since the big fails last winter/spring - the elision between fannish meta and oppositional work has become more complete than I'd like. I'd rather have something like [community profile] linkspam to give me thoughts about Russophobia, and keep metafandom for fic theorization. -
    (tags: meta)

  • skye: Archive of Our Own Vs. Fanfiction.net - I'm doing a comparison post between both sites and how they function right at this moment. Keep in mind that despite critique, I still like both sites. -
    (tags: fanfic ao3)

  • farad: An interesting article- metafandom meets pro-publishing - The biggest reason I'm subjecting you guys to it is that the first half of it is about why the writers - and reading/paying market for this exploding new literary field - are straight women. You know, in case you want to be over-analyzed by academia about why we like to read hot m/m sex. -

  • [info]cluegirl: Thoughts Contingent on Reader Entitlement; the fandom edition - For Cod's sake, could we please put a little effort into remembering that the writer does not OWE us, the readers, anything more than A Story? And that if we get A Story, there is no contractual obligation under which it will have been written to our tastes, to our preferences, or even to our level of skill or comprehension? -
    (tags: fanfic)

  • [info]silentauror: Thoughts on fic exchange feedback - On the same hand, it's the holidays and regardless of how well it came off, someone spent a lot of time and hard work on a story for someone, and is it really my place to come raining all over their parade? One the other hand, it was still posted in public, not emailed directly to the recipient, and obviously getting comments from readers other than the recipient is also a big part of an exchange like this. -

  • [info]fakeplasticsnow: [in idolmeta] SURVEY: Inspiration vs. Perspiration - 1. Look back to the fic that garnered you the most reviews. How long did it take you to write that fic? How does that compare with the average amount of time you take writing a fic?2. Does the trend apply to you too, then? Is the amount of time you take writing something inversely proportional to the number of reviews you get?3. If yes, do you agree that inspiration tends to eclipse effort exerted, in terms of what fic readers respond to? -

If you receive a gift notice before the 25th, it's possible it's an older gift that's just being uploaded; the recipient field isn't just for Yuletide! If you don't want to spoil yourself, then have someone else look -- it may have an older date on it. If you're then pretty sure that it's a Yuletide 2009 story that somehow isn't hidden, write to us at yuletide@yuletidetreasure.org.

Proxies: Transferring the Story to the Author and Removing Yourself as Co-Author

If you're a proxy wanting to pass the story on to the actual author, here are instructions! If you have any trouble, please contact AO3 support! Any issues you have, others will have, and they need to know what's working and what might not be.

I'm assured that it's not really very hard - removing yourself as an author is just a matter of clicking a link! Thanks so much to Cal for the instructions, so I didn't have to think. *g*

    1. The other person needs to create and activate an account on the Archive, and let you know their username and any pseud they want to use on the story.

    2. You then need to add the other person as a co-author of the story. You can do this by clicking on one of the 'Edit' links to reach the edit form. There is an 'Add co-authors?' link near the top. Clicking on that will make a new field appear immediately below (or take you to a new page if you don't have Javascript enabled). You can type the other person's pseud into the field - autocomplete should hopefully help out. Tip: if the pseud is different from the person's username, look for one in the format "pseud (username)".

    3. Preview to make sure both names appear, then click the 'Update' button. The other person should now be listed as a co-author, and have the ability to edit the story too. (They should also receive an email notifying them they've been added, but occasionally Archive emails get classified as spam or go astray.) Please be sure to confirm with each other that this has worked correctly before moving on to the next step!

    4. Click 'Edit' to return to the edit form again. At the top on the right, there should now be a 'Remove Me As Author" link which you can click to remove yourself as an author. You should be returned to your dashboard and see a message saying you've been removed, and the story should no longer appear among your recent works. \0/
